Baking Time

We decided it would be a great deal of fun to try some baking.  I am pretty sure that all the children liked the cookies as they continued to ask if they could have more than one.

During this activity we talked about measurement and all of the different things we need just to make cookies (flour, salt, brown sugar, white sugar, butter, vanilla, eggs, baking soda and of course chocolate chips).  So many of them were worried I was going to hurt myself when using the mixer.  I showed them the trick to getting everything off the beaters by turning the beater on high.  They were waiting for food to fly all over the room (it did not happen). The recipe was great.  We are currently trying to think of something else that we might be able to make as a big class.

Lots of Letters

We have learnt a lot of new letters lately.  We have worked on 'k', 'j' and 'o'.  The children were very creative when making the letter 'J'.

We have almost finished the entire alphabet.  There are only a few letters left.

2 D Shapes

We have been working really hard on identifying different simple 2 D shapes.  We have learnt a fun little song about Mr. Shape Head.  We then went on a hunt around the classroom to find the different shapes we needed to make our very own Mr. Shape Head.  It was also interesting how the groups problem solved if the eyes were too big, not the correct shape or colour.  There was a lot of team work going on in each and every group.  Each student had a role to play and different thing to find.

Working on Word Problems

We have been working really hard at trying to do figure out how to do word problems in math.  We can't read all of the words yet so we have some easy steps to follow.

Step 1:  Circle the numbers

Step 2: Circle the last word.  Does it start with an 'a' or a 'l'.  That tells us if we are going to push together or pull apart.

Step 3: Use your fingers, draw on the carpet or other math strategies to figure out the answer.

Sample Question:  If Jim has 2 cookies and George gives him 5 cookies.  How many does he have in all?
