Book Fair and Field Trip

Hello all,

The book fair was planned for next week but unfortunately we have had to post pone this amazing event.  I will send home June Scholastic Flyers for you to purchase summer books from.  Please keep in mind that the bonus coupons earned off these purchases help to supplement the classrooms.  However the Kindergarten concert is still on and I hope to see you all there.

The field trip forms will also be coming back this week if you could please fill them out as soon as possible and return them that would be greatly appreciated.

Non Standard Units of Measurement

Most of us know how to use a ruler or a tape measure to figure out how long or tall something is.  In Kindergarten those things are a little trickier to use so we measure things with . . . . . other things. This week we used our pattern cubes to measure different things around the classroom.  We started out with small things and then went to the really big.

I measured a car.  It is three cubes.  Can you write that?

I measured this car.  It is big.

I am measuring this doll.  Can I have one of your cubes?

Hold still.  We need to count how tall you are.

How big is the water table?

Okay! We want to measure you Ms. Groneberg lay down.

Pumpkin Planting

Thank you to some amazing parent volunteers.  The children had a great deal of fun today planting our pumpkins in the garden.  We were able to dig and play in the dirt.  I can't wait to see how they grow.  Steps we had to do to plant our pumpkins.  Step 1: Make a hill of dirt.  Step 2: Make a hole in the middle of the hill of dirt.  Step 3: Put in your plant.  Step 4: Cover up your plant to the first set of leaves (so it doesn't blow over).  Step 5: Water your plant.  Yipee!  We had so much fun.

This Weeks Home Reading

So, this weeks home reading will be very similar to every other week.  The one thing that is a little different is there is a paper in the home reading bag with the word ______'s sight words.  There were a few kids that were talking in the afternoon class about keeping track of all the words they know and the new ones they want to learn.  So I found something that might work.  You do not have to use it if you don't want to.  The idea is they either place a sticker or colour in the square when they can read that word on their own in lots of different places.  You can have them cut it out and staple to corner together.  If you don't want to use it please go ahead and recycle it.  If I see it in the home reading bag each week I will add a new one or two lists each week.  A lot of these words will be words that are in their home reading books.  Enjoy and I hope you all have an amazing weekend.

Updates from the School

Why does my child not have a library book?  Do I have one hiding in the house somewhere?  No, you might not.  We have missed a couple of library visits due to the fact that they are painting and rearranging in there and it is not safe for all of us in there.

Gym?  We have been doing gym in the classroom lately as it has been a little difficult to get through the hallways with all the painting going on.  I am hoping to do gym outside next week.  Please dress your child for snow, rain or shine.  It does not matter what the weather is, we will be going out. Thank you for understanding.

Tomorrow is the pm kindergarten students turn for early dismissal.  Everyone else have a great weekend.

Butterfield Acres Farm Trip

A big thank you to all the volunteers that came out on Friday to make our field trip a success.  The children had so much fun.  I can't put it in to words so I will just add a great deal of pictures.

Happy Mother's Day!

I hope you have all enjoyed your weekend and most importantly the Mother's Day gifts that your children worked very hard to make.  The kids were able to make a choice between muffins and making you a wreath to hang.  No matter which one they picked they worked hard all week to get everything just right.  I hope you enjoyed them.

Butterfield Acres

I will be sending home a reminder of everything the children need to bring for the field trip on Friday. I do however still need a few volunteers to join us on the trip.  If you have not already volunteered and can come with us please let me know as soon as possible.  Thank you.

The "at" Family

We have been working on the "at" word family.  We sounded out real and 'fun' words that have "at" in them.  To work on this we have also made them out of playdough, written them on white boards and looked for them in books on the shelves.  The one that a lot of the kids liked was sorting the words in two different piles "at" words and "not at" words.

Our Pumpkins

The kids are so excited to watch our pumpkins grow.  They run over to the plants every time they come in the room.  They have watched as the stalk and leaves pushed up through the soil.  They look every day to see if there are more out.  They were also really excited when the one stalk and leaves popped up and the outer shell of the seed came out with it.
